Back in November 2 members of our team attended the Telford & Wrekin White Ribbon Event. White Ribbon UK is a nation-wide campaign, they aim to tackle the issue of male violence against women. They work with men and boys to tackle the masculine culture. This event was held on the international day for the elimination of violence against women (25th November). We were able to hear insights from services around Telford & Wrekin and survivors of domestic violence to talk about what is in place and what needs to be better in the area. We also had the opportunity to hear from Chris Hemmings, the author of Be A Man. He had some very insightful information and ideas. Whilst there we were able to network with a diverse range of people and discuss how we were going to engage with this issue to help raise awareness. A member of the team here (Megan) is very passionate about this issue and is keen to start some work around the subject here with Recharge. She has secured some funding through Brookside Big Local to undergo a training course, which will enable her to become a qualified facilitator of the Freedom Programme. This is a programme written by Pat Craven, that enables victims and survivors of domestic violence to gain a better understanding of what they have suffered. It also gives them a platform to begin their journey to recovery. The aim following the training is to run a range of groups following this programme across the borough and then to develop a smaller, simpler programme suitable for secondary schools. The aim is to raise awareness around the subject in younger people, as a form of prevention.
